Club weather widgets are coming soon
A short note on the club widget plan: one hosted forecast page, one embeddable panel, and a simple way for clubs to replace stale weather links with a useful soaring summary.
A lot of club websites already have a weather page. Usually it is a practical mix of RASP links, webcams, Met Office links, NOTAM resources, local airfield notes, and maybe a few static images that have been there for years. That page is useful, but it is rarely something a member can glance at and immediately understand: is today worth going to the airfield?
That is the gap the Convek club widget is meant to fill. The first version is deliberately small: one club, one site or airfield, one forecast panel. It shows the fields that matter for a quick briefing: day rating, thermal strength, cloudbase, usable soaring height, surface wind, winds aloft, and forecast freshness. It links back to Convek and carries a plain note that it is not an aviation forecast.
The important product decision is that clubs should not need an API key for this. Convek is still an API product, but most club webmasters do not want to think about bearer tokens, JSON, quota, or caching. They want a hosted page they can link to, or a small iframe they can paste into an existing weather page. The widget should make that possible without turning a club volunteer into a developer.
The free version will be branded and simple. That is the trade: clubs get a useful panel for members, and Convek gets an honest powered-by link from a relevant club page. Paid options can come later for custom colours, club logos, multiple launch sites, email summaries, and analytics, but that is not the first job. First we need to prove clubs want the basic thing.
The first rollout will be enquiry-led. That means checking the coordinates, checking the current coverage, and sending a preview before anything is treated as live. It is slower than a self-serve builder, but it avoids a messy launch where anyone can generate unlimited arbitrary widgets.
