Data License

Last updated: 15 April 2026

This license governs how you may use forecast data obtained through the Convek API. By using the API, you agree to these terms in addition to the Terms of Service.

1. What You're Licensing

Convek forecasts are derived products - we run high-resolution weather models (WRF) on publicly available input data (NOAA GFS, DWD ICON) and post-process the output into soaring-specific fields (thermal strength, cloudbase, convergence, etc.).

This license covers the processed, structured data you receive from the Convek API - not the underlying raw model output or source data.

2. What You Can Do

  • Use the data in your applications - mobile apps, websites, instruments, desktop software, internal tools.
  • Display the data to your users - maps, charts, dashboards, alerts, notifications.
  • Cache the data locally - for performance or offline use, within reasonable limits (see section 4).
  • Create derived products - combine Convek data with your own logic, scoring, or additional data sources.

3. What You Must Do

  • Show a clear disclaimer to end users - make it clear that Convek data is model-derived forecast guidance, not official aviation weather, and must not be used as the sole basis for flight or safety-critical decisions.
  • Keep your API keys secure - never expose them in client-side code, public repositories, or URLs.
  • Preserve source and timing context - do not hide forecast timestamps, stale-data states, or outage states when displaying Convek output.

4. What You Cannot Do

  • Bulk redistribution - do not resell, syndicate, or redistribute raw Convek API responses as a competing data feed or API.
  • Systematic archiving - do not build a permanent archive of historical Convek data for redistribution. Reasonable caching for application performance (up to 5 days) is fine.
  • Use as sole operational guidance - do not use Convek as the sole basis for launch, dispatch, routing, task setting, or any other safety-critical decision.
  • Misrepresent the data - do not present Convek forecasts as certified aviation weather, official meteorological products, or your own proprietary model output.
  • Hide uncertainty or staleness - do not suppress timestamps, stale-data warnings, or failure states that would materially change how an end user interprets the forecast.

5. Tier-Specific Terms

  • Free / Pilot tiers - personal and non-commercial use. May be used in personal projects, hobby apps, and club tools.
  • Dev / Dev Pro tiers - commercial use permitted. May be used in commercial applications, paid products, and revenue-generating services.
  • Partner / Enterprise - custom terms. Contact us to discuss.

Convek attribution is welcome, but it is not required on any tier. What is required is that you do not hide the source nature of the data or present it as official aviation weather.

6. Source Data Attribution

Convek forecasts are derived from publicly available data. We acknowledge:

  • NOAA / NWS - Global Forecast System (GFS) input data is produced by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Public domain.
  • DWD - ICON model data is produced by the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst). Used under their open data license.
  • NCAR - The WRF model is developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Open-source.

7. Termination

If you violate these terms, we may revoke your API access. Upon termination, you must stop using and delete any cached Convek data within 30 days.

8. Changes

We may update this license. Material changes will be communicated via email. Continued API use after changes constitutes acceptance.
